Artists making their own brushes.
Brushes for cave paintings were created between 16500 and 13000 BC.
Until the end of the 17th century, brushes were made by artists and their apprentices themselves.

Handmade Fan Brush with horsehair bristles and bamboo handle.
I am a bit fascinated by brushes. As a lot of my ceramics I drew and painted on, I needed good brushes. I always use Chinese brushes and my favorite ( for cat bowls) is a very long narrow thin ended brush. Its good for loading the slip on ( like most Chinese brushes) and paints quite accurately. Before I saw these photos, I had already made myself a brush by tying together 3 feathers. Using ink and large canvases has really heightened my quest for good and interesting brushes. I used a single feather for some of my recent drawing at the South Lakes Wildlife Zoo.
